Things are officially over for The Bachelorette‘s Clare Crawley and Dale Moss.

Anyone who tuned in to

The Bachelorette season 16

last year knows all about Clare and Dale’s love story. To catch you up to speed if you missed it, Clare, who fans will remember from Juan Pablo’s season of

The Bachelor

, snagged the coveted spot as the franchise’s leading lady, only to leave just weeks in after falling in love. It was love at first sight for her and contestant Dale, and the pair got engaged just a few episodes in.

Tayshia Adams

then stepped in as Clare’s replacement for the remainder of the season.

While Clare and Dale certainly had their cute moments, I think I speak for nearly everyone when I say the pair got

a bit

annoying at times, and although I was rooting for them to work, it’s not entirely surprising that they’ve split in my opinion.

E! News reported today that the two were “taking time apart,” and now Dale has confirmed the unfortunate news on his Instagram Story. As noted by Us Weekly, the 32-year-old former football player took to social media this afternoon to write:

"I wanted [to] share with you all that Clare and I have decided to go our separate ways. We appreciate the love and support we’ve received [from] so many people, but this is the healthiest decision for both of us at this time. We strongly believe in leading with love and always remaining true to oneself — something our families have taught and instilled in us throughout our lives. We only hope the best things for one another."

We’re definitely disappointed to hear the news, but for anyone who might be surprised, there apparently were some clues leading up to their split. Fans on Reddit noticed some odd social media activity from both Clare and Dale this month, and many had been suspecting that perhaps they’d broken up.

As much as we can poke fun at Clare and Dale, dating on national television certainly can’t be easy, and we’re sure The Bachelorette alums would appreciate kind words and respect during this tough time.
