Blast from the past?! One of Clare Crawley‘s exes has just come forward to defend her, and he is weighing in on the drama that’s been going down this season of The Bachelorette so far.

In case you missed it, season 16 of The Bachelorette has been quite the mess. After months of COVID-19-related delays, Clare and her 31 suitors were finally able to start filming at a resort in California. Already, the rules were switched up, but things got even crazier when the leading lady reportedly left early after finding love with contestant Dale Moss.

As of right now, we’re three episodes in and Clare is still the star of the show, however ABC is teasing the fact that she’s about to leave and be replaced by Tayshia Adams. It’s a lot, we know.

People watching at home have had so many feelings about this season, particularly negative ones towards Clare, and now her ex-fiancé is sticking up for her.

As reported by Cosmopolitan, Benoit Beausejour-Savard recently joined the Almost Famous podcast with hosts Ben Higgins and Ashley Iaconetti, where he revealed his thoughts on the current season of The Bachelorette.

“Clare is a really deep person. She likes to get to know you on a really deeper level, which is not showing at all,” Benoit claimed. He went on to elaborate with:

"I would say this is not the Clare that I know. Put yourself into her shoes, you’re doing quarantine in a resort. This show’s a bit [of a] mindf**k, you’ve been there, it’s a lot to manage and I feel like at some point maybe she was overwhelmed by all this. She felt super strong feelings with Dale and then this whole thing played out….There’s a little difference in the Clare that is shown on TV than the Clare that I know in real life."

Fans will remember that Clare and Benoit met on The Bachelor: Winter Games back in 2018, and even got engaged during After The Final Rose. The pair didn’t last long, however, unfortunately breaking up about two months after Benoit popped the question.

Clearly the exes are on good terms, though, and Benoit even congratulated The Bachelorette‘s leading lady once she scored the job. Taking to Instagram, he wrote, “Congratulations to this gem!! She will be an amazing Bachelorette. She is smart, fun, strong, knows what she wants and most importantly, she will call out the guys messing around!!”

We probably won’t ever know if the Clare we’re seeing on TV is the one who Benoit fell in love with, but we do know that we hope to see more of him on our screens in the future. He’s such a sweetheart!

Continue watching season 16 of The Bachelorette for all the drama and romance, with this week’s new episode airing on Thursday, November 5 on ABC.
