It goes without saying that season 25 Bachelor Matt James has landed the role of a lifetime. Some fans are still curious to know how the 29-year-old star from North Carolina actually became the latest male lead. After all, Matt James didn’t go the typical route to becoming the Bachelor.

Was Matt James on The Bachelorette?

To the surprise of many, Matt James was never a contestant on The Bachelorette. As noted by Refinery29, this will be the first time in 13 years the chosen Bachelor didn’t appear on The Bachelorette at all before being chosen as the lead. With that said, he’s not a complete stranger to Bachelor Nation.

As the publication notes, this isn’t the first time a Bachelor hadn’t been on The Bachelorette, but it is a rare occasion. And as many fans already know, James is actually best friends with Tyler Cameron, who got his celebrity start on Hannah Brown’s season of The Bachelorette. Prior to being selected as the season 25 Bachelor, Matt was chosen to be a contestant on Clare Crawley’s season. Later on, his BFF said Matt “dodged a bullet” when that plan was changed.

Once Matt was on Bachelor Nation’s radar, reps at ABC claim they knew he was the best choice for the role of the next lead. Reported by Refinery29, ABC Entertainment President Karey Burke explained how Matt became the Bachelor without having been on the show prior, saying, “Matt has been on our radar since February, when producers first approached him to join Bachelor Nation, as part of Clare’s season,” adding, “When filming couldn’t move forward as planned, we were given the benefit of time to get to know Matt and all agreed he would make a perfect Bachelor.”

From the looks of it, they were right about that. Reportedly, a record-breaking number of women applied for Matt James’ season. As Refinery29 notes, there was also a petition signed by nearly 90,000 people, including contestants, wanting to see a more diverse cast and specifically, pushing for the show to cast a Black lead for season 25.

Wish granted, Bachelor fans! Matt James will be making history on January 4 and we’re more excited than ever to see how his season plays out.
