20. There Are Off-Camera Moments That Don’t Make It Onto The Show
It’s true that the cameras are around almost all the time, it’s also impossible to be every where all the time. This means that some pretty significant stuff can happen when a camera isn’t rolling.
Catherine Giudici-Lowe remembers a favorite moment between her and her future husband that happened when no one was watching. “There are a lot of special moments that the camera doesn’t capture. My favorite was when Sean [Lowe] slipped me a note during our flight to St. Croix. He did it secretively so no one else could see. He had crossed out the destination on his airline ticket and written ‘Snugglesville’ instead…letting me know he wanted to cuddle with me and no one else.”
Producers have a lot of power, but this goes to show that they can’t control everything, even though they try to. Those brutal limo rides home can become grueling for the rejected. They often drive around until the cast off agrees to talk. All those teary post-rose ceremony confessions are sometimes coerced by just waiting them out.
They also offer counsel about when to say things – probably to ensure they get them on camera. When Sean wanted to say “I love you” to Emily Maynard on her season of The Bachelorette, he ran it by producers first. They instructed him to, “Please wait to tell Emily during the evening portion of the date when things are supposed to be more serious.”
