29. The Average Contestant Is 25 Years Old And A Size 6

Of all the things that annoy me about The Bachelor, this might be at the very top of the list. Not because we should have anything against 25 year olds or women who are size 6, but because it’s just lazy. It doesn’t reflect the average American woman and it’s a little insulting to try to sell us this cliche. We’re more than young, thing women, ABC. Listen up.

Over the 20 or so years of this show’s run, they haven’t tried to deviate from this very narrow paradigm, and it’s a bummer. Most recently, ABC announced it’s first African-American Bachelorette, and we’re definitely pumped. But how about mix it up a little in terms of size and age?

Why can’t real American women be represented on this show? Not every single man in the country likes ’em skinny and young. There are all sorts of types out there, and I know that men grow weary of the same thing over and over.

Rachel’s casting is a giant leap forward in terms of diversifying the casting, but there is still a ton of sizism and ageism being condoned over there at ABC. These women aren’t a real cross-section of American women. In fact, they probably look very little like those of us who are tuning into this show every week. Maybe that’s why they have to pick the nutty ones, to make us feel better about the women all looking exactly the same.
