Zach Shallcross just might be the most honest and straightforward Bachelor we’ve had in a while. In the two episodes of his season so far, he’s been vulnerable and opened up in a way that many before him haven’t.

This includes sending contestants home that he’s not vibing with! Imagine that. Not keeping people around just for the sake of it and realizing they also had a life before this and sacrificed a lot to be there. I respect it, and I respect Zach immensely for it.

Speaking of which, Zach Shallcross opened up in a vulnerable way during this week’s episode. During the second group date’s afterparty, Zach was asked by contestant Jess Girdo to share something special or unique about him.

Here’s what he had to say:

Zach Shallcross opens up about dealing with pyloric stenosis

When he was born, he was diagnosed with a condition called pyloric stenosis. According to MayoClinic.org, it is “an uncommon condition in infants that blocks food from entering the small intestine.”

He shared with Jess, “When I was born, I was diagnosed with pyloric stenosis. I was told that I was not going to live, and my mom kept fighting. And I feel like a crazy sense of purpose, like I’m here for a reason. And I can’t believe I’m talking about this right now. I don’t think I’ve ever actually said this really out loud, unless my mom said it.”

This was a huge moment for Zach, especially sharing something so personal and private with someone he has only just met. But this is what I respect about Zach Shallcross more than anyone else. It may seem too early to share the details, but he is putting his heart out there and taking a risk. After all, isn’t that what love is all about?

He’s been brave enough to open up and even though it might be frightening, Zach has been very open and eager to help the contestants feel at ease during the process.

We’re very happy to know that Zach survived the condition and went on to live a fruitful and exciting life–and luckily for him, it is just starting!
