Of all the endings we may not have initially seen coming on The Bachelor season 25 with Matt James, this is certainly one of them. We officially have two more episodes left on Matt’s journey to find love, and though most of us have read the spoilers, we’re still desperate to find out how it all goes down.

Plus, what happens after Matt gives away that coveted final rose? Is there a proposal, and is Matt still with that contestant today?

*Spoilers ahead for The Bachelor season 25.

Reportedly, Matt James is currently single. However, he’s probably not ready to mingle just yet, all things considered.

In a very matter-of-fact way, Reality Steve took to Twitter on February 22 and revealed the news, writing, “(SPOILER): Not that Matt’s statement wasn’t pretty clear itself, but I can confirm that Matt and Rachael have broken up.”

Check out the confirmation post below.

While some people online are asking what went wrong, others are saying that filling in the biggest blanks surrounding why it ultimately didn’t work out for Matt James and Rachael Kirkconnell seems pretty obvious. Not to mention, the biggest clues have seemingly come from Matt’s recent statements.

During the Women Tell All special, Matt, the first black Bachelor lead in the show’s history, once again stated that he’s been learning what he didn’t know about the season 25 contestants alongside the rest of us watching the show unfold.

Recently, Matt revealed where he stood regarding the controversy surrounding Rachael Kirkconnell’s racist behavior as well. He let the world know via Instagram that he’s definitely not okay with it, believes the franchise “fell short,” and as you’d expect, remains extremely disappointed by what he’s heard and learned.

During the Women Tell All, Matt also reiterated that no matter what mistakes might’ve been made by contestants, he’s “not perfect,” either. Online, some fans wondered if he was alluding to what’s been said about Rachael and the parts she’s owned up to on social media. Still, it seems that Rachael’s very publicized mistakes might’ve been too damaging for the couple to maintain their relationship.

Breakups are undoubtedly difficult no matter the circumstances. Obviously, we can’t definitively say why these two chose to not work it out. Nor can we know everything that ultimately led to their break up. However, it seems likely that the racist behavior, Rachael’s admitted past mistakes, and the public’s attention on their relationship right now might’ve majorly strained their still-new relationship. We’re sure it took a major toll on what the two once shared, whether they wanted to work it out or not.

After all, both Matt and Rachael admitted they’d never been in love until meeting each other on The Bachelor. So chances are, their breakup has been anything but easy for more than one reason. Still, the biggest reasons do seem clear to most, even without direct confirmation.

When The Bachelor comes to a full close, we’re sure the season 25 lead will have much more to say about what went wrong with Rachael Kirkconnell, where they stand today, and what’s next for Matt James as he moves forward. But for now, we must wait.
