12. Arie Luyendyk Jr.: Season 22
What do we say about Arie Luyendyk Jr. that hasn’t already been said before? His season didn’t have ridiculous moments by any means, and if you look back, you’d be hard-pressed to find anything memorable–until you get to the very end.
He “pulled a Mesnick” as many would call it when he opted to change his mind about the woman he wanted to spend the rest of his life with. In the season 22 finale, Arie proposed to Becca Kufrin, and the couple left the series engaged.
However, within a few weeks, doubt crept into Arie’s mind as he began contemplating if he had made the wrong choice by proposing to Becca instead of Lauren Burnham. Eventually, the doubt manifested into his truth and one of the most dramatic (for reals) moments in Bachelor Nation history when he decided to break up with Becca and go back to Lauren. The breakup was televised and too gut-wrenching to watch and made many of us hate Arie with a passion.
The televised (and surprise) breakup for Becca resulted in her becoming the next Bachelorette, but it wasn’t exactly the path anyone would have wanted to take to get there. But it appears Arie’s decision to pursue a life with Lauren truly was the right one for him because not only are they still married, they also have a daughter together.
So while Arie’s season certainly ended in a bittersweet manner (with his happily ever after and Becca’s heart being crushed), it did prove that following your heart isn’t always a bad thing. Unless of course, you’re breaking up with your fiance knowing the whole world will watch the humiliation. Maybe there was a better way to about that, don’t you think?
