Dancing With The Stars Week 1: Kaitlyn Bristowe does the Cha-Cha
By Julia Wagner
ABC’s hit show Dancing With The Stars premiered Monday night, and Kaityln Bristowe got her first chance to dance on the big stage!
It’s back! Dancing With The Stars has officially returned for Season 29 (and with it a very excited Kaitlyn Bristowe–but more on that in a second!). This season is unlike any other: there is no live audience, so we have to make do with simulated applause (and a good amount of simulated booing as well). The pairs of dancers are spaced out in the balcony to watch the dances, and the judges are as well.
It looks like Len Goodman will not be judging this season (heartbreak!) but may conference in virtually at regular intervals. Longtime pro Derek Hough is the newest judge, and the new host is none other than Tyra Banks! Even with all these changes, it still feels great to be back.
One of the most exciting aspects of this new season is that Bachelorette royalty Kaitlyn Bristowe is getting her long-awaited chance to compete on the show. Last night, she danced the Cha-Cha with her partner, Russian-American professional dancer Artem Chigvintsev. They seemed super excited to be paired up with each other, and Kaitlyn Bristowe said she was “in it to win it!”
So, how was her very first performance?
The pair looked amazing in their neon yellow costumes, dancing to Lady Gaga’s “Stupid Love,” and the judges were very impressed (as was Lady Gaga herself)! Bruno Tonioli was up out of his chair, complimenting Kaitlyn’s foot placement and saying it was “brilliant” for week 1.
Carrie Ann Inaba also said it was a “great first dance,” but lowered her score due to a lack of pointed toes. New judge Derek Hough agreed that it was a great first dance, but commented that it was a little too “safe.” If there’s anything Kaitlyn Bristowe is not known for, it’s playing it safe, so surely she will take the advice and take more risks in the future!
In the end, Kaitlyn and Artem received a 6 from Carrie Ann, but 7s from both Derek and Bruno, adding up to a very respectable first week score of 20 out of 30. The pair finished the night tied for third place on the leaderboard, and their score will be added to next week’s score.
Kaitlyn needs all of us to vote for her, so be sure to tune in next week! Can’t wait to see what the next dance ends up being!
