The Bachelor season 23: Colton jumps the fence
I have to admit, I was not 100% excited for Colton Underwood’s season of The Bachelor. His virginity seemed to be the only selling point, and I was concerned he was too young to provide a thrilling season. However, after Cassie Randolph informed Colton she was leaving the show and wasn’t in love with him, I was eating my words as Colton delivered a truly awe-inspiring, fourth-wall-breaking, amazing feat of athleticism when he became the first Bachelor to literally try to run away from the show.
But this was no ordinary runaway. There were camera punches! Mic packs ripped off! Chris Harrison jogging through the Portugal countryside! I half expected the producers to find Colton sitting around a dinner table with a nice Portuguese family, being fed local cuisine, and crying about Cassie.
Alas, he was found wandering down the side of the road. There was some extra fourth wall breakage when he admitted he didn’t have his phone. Somehow Chris Harrison was able to coax him back into the van, promising they could be done with the show.
There are so many things that make this one of the most iconic Bachelor moments ever. It revealed that the lead really is just as subject to producer misdirection as the contestants are, and can get just as angry about it.
It provided an unprecedented look at production as the crew scrambled to get Colton back. Most of all, it confirmed just how savvy the show really is. After both Colton and his number one girl literally fled the scene, the producers still managed to coax both of them back into a happy ending! I’ll give respect where respect is due.
