The Bachelor: Listen To Your Heart: Season 1, episode 1 performance grades
Jamie Gabrielle, “Gravity”
Vocal Performance: B
I concur with Jamie’s assessment that this song definitely was not the best choice for her range as well. I’m now realizing this was likely the point, as the lack of wide-sweeping range gave any potential contestants picked for this date the best shot of nailing it.
She was at her best with the vibratos at the beginning of her notes, though that vocal technique is not particularly my favorite. Was it Grammy worthy? Definitely not. But it wasn’t bad, and considering her voiced discomfort with the genre, I’ll take it. Her range is definitely best-suited to pop songs, just as she said:
Interpretive Routine: A
Jamie started off a bit awkward, don’t we all–especially in stilettos. That said, once she got into it, she had the whole swaying arms in line with the vocals thing down pat. Jamie definitely got more comfortable as the song progressed, and it showed in both her voice and movements. She also stole quite a few cutesy glances at Ryan during the performance and seemed to be pretty into it by the end of the track.
~Romance~ Level: C
Jamie, you started off so strong in this category! If I was judging this solely off of her time at Capitol Records, she’d have swept this with an A+. It was clear – on the date – that she was super into Ryan and his sway moves.
She had me in the first half, not gonna lie. With that said, her grade plummeted when she listened to her heart a bit too much and entertained a second John Mayer serenade from Mr. Right, Gurl, the sequel. We’ll get to that momentarily.
