Former Bachelor Chris Soules is making headlines for his part in a wrongful death lawsuit. Here’s everything you need to know.

Even casual fans of The Bachelor will remember Chris Soules. This country boy from Iowa won hearts as the lead of season 19. While he’ll always be remembered for his gentlemanly ways, now he’s going down in history for something far less fortunate: he’s set to pay $2.5 million as part of a wrongful death lawsuit.

If you’re unfamiliar with this tragic incident, here are the details. Back in 2017, Chris Soules was arrested and charged with leaving the scene of an accident. Allegedly, his pickup truck had rear-ended a John Deere tractor and ran it off the road and into a ditch. Soules tried to help and even called 911, but ultimately left the scene before police arrived. The other driver, a 66-year-old veteran, died from his injuries.

It was truly something awful. Now, years later, things seem to finally be getting settled. Chris Soules will pay the massive sum and hopefully there will be some sense of peace for the victim’s family. You can find the many details of the ongoing proceedings here.

This is far from the first time that a cast member from The Bachelor or The Bachelorette has gotten in legal trouble. We immediately think of incidents like the Bachelor in Paradise confrontation between DeMario Jackson and Corinne Olympios, in which DeMario allegedly touched Corinne in an inappropriate manner while she was heavily intoxicated. There are also several lesser-degree incidents that seem to go down every season with minor contestants, like how Kevin Fortenberry’s mugshot made the rounds before he could appear on Hannah Brown’s turn on The Bachelorette.

Still, this settlement with Chris Soules is certainly one of the most high profile incidents we’ve heard of to date. It will be interesting to see if any more major news comes after the announcement of this settlement.
