The Bachelor fence jump *finally* happened last night! Sure, it was fun to watch things play out, but did it totally live up to the hype?

We. Waited. Forever. The Bachelor had been hyping Colton Underwood’s now infamous fence jump ever since the beginning of the season. It will be dramatic! they promised. It will change things forever! they implied. But did that fence jump really live up to the hype?

Let’s quickly recap: after contestant Cassie Randolph told Colton that her feelings didn’t match his own, she decided to leave the show. He fought for her valiantly, but ultimately things couldn’t change between them. Later, he did what apparently felt like the only logical thing to do when you’re constantly being followed by a small army of cameramen plus Chris Harrison. He jumped a fence, leaving The Bachelor property and heading out to presumably quit the show entirely.

If we had seen this glorious moment without any buildup, I think it’s safe to say that it would have blown our minds. Nearly every season, we hear about Bachelors and Bachelorettes who muse about quitting, but we’ve never seen anyone make quite so dramatic an exit.

Unfortunately, we had some high expectations by the time the jump finally happened.

The Bachelor fans had been obsessing for weeks! We’d been picking apart the contestants, speculating on Colton’s motivations and proposing wild and crazy conspiracy theories. There was even a Twitter account dedicated to the jump that informed a huge base of fans about the status of the fence week by week.

And you know what? The moment was great! It was dramatic, it was a touch surprising, it made Colton seem that much more genuine. Bachelor Nation responded in kind. But. . . was it the golden unicorn moment that the series made it out to be? Come on.

Unlike hyped events of Bachelors past, like Arie Luyendyk’s breakup with Becca Kufrin, so far there seems very little about this event that we didn’t already see in a promo. After weeks of buildup, there was simply no way for The Bachelor to adequately cash in. We’ve been bamboozled, ya’ll.

Fortunately, the drama cut off at a halfway point during last night’s episode. Next week promises to pick up where things get off. Could ABC be saving the even juicier bits for the final week? Man, we hope so.
