The Bachelor is a dating experience that stands alone. But does it have some similar features to a modern dating app?

Just in time for our weekend viewing pleasure, new Bachelor Colton Underwood dropped by Live with Kelly and Ryan yesterday. The interview is cracking us up!

While The Bachelor has fans across the entire nation, apparently host Kelly Ripa does not usually count herself among us. Just check out this brief clip from Colton’s interview, where the process positively baffles her:

“Why?” she asks incredulously. She is truly baffled as to why such a normal, good looking guy would subject himself to the rigors of Bachelor drama.

Colton’s answer is beyond perfect. He points out that an experience on a dating app can be just as crazy, if not crazier than going on The Bachelor. He describes the show as one of the most “real” ways to get to know someone, freeing up two people on a date without the modern crutch of their cell phones.

Alright, so comparing The Bachelor to the craziness of using a dating app might be a bit of a stretch. After all, dating apps are used by many people, while a spot on The Bachelor is nigh on impossible to attain. Still, he’s not wrong in suggesting that both dating apps and his season achieve a similar style of pseudo-speed dating.

He’s also spot on in his description of our dependency on cell phones. The Bachelor is famous for taking away contestants’ phones, as well as any entertainment. Sure, it feeds into the drama of the series but there’s also the upside that Colton described: no one is distracted when they’re on a date with him. He can actually get to know these ladies when he’s out with them!

What do you think? Was comparing The Bachelor to a dating app entirely fair? Is the lack of technology the only upside of dating on the series? Let us know what you think in the comments!
