44. The Bachelorette and Bachelor Get Their Own Stylist
While the masses of men and women vying for the attention of their almost-spouse have to scramble and borrow from each other to dress themselves every week, The Bachelor or The Bachelorette gets their own personal stylist.
They get to choose their outfits, as long as they aren’t white, checked, or striped, from an array of designer duds. They are pampered and spoiled and treated like the king or queen of the universe – which they kinda are. They are scrubbed and buffed within an inch of their lives and wind up on screen looking like shining diamonds. They probably even have someone standing off camera with a hanky waiting to dab the sweat off them.
In fact, producers hire stylists to guide the leads into a certain look, which they also do for the aspiring wives. If a lead’s look is too dated or too loud, they step in to make them more attractable and well… more dateable. For the women, in an effort to help their future hubs differentiate between them, they guide their looks. If a girl is too edgy or American they offer advice to help them stand out.
In season 18 of The Bachelor, Juan Pablo’s stylist had to tone down his use of color. Cary Fetman says of Juan’s choices, “He was not afraid to try anything. He never worried about what people would think if he was wearing bright yellow pants with an orange shirt and purple socks. He loved it all. [Juan Pablo] said, ‘I want Miami hot, and a little taste of Latin.’ I took that and ran with it.”
