50 secrets only true Bachelor fanatics know

2. Rachel Is The First Bachelorette Of Color
This is really good news in more ways than one. First, Rachel is kind of awesome. Although ABC announced her Bachelorette status a little prematurely, we’re still really excited about watching her find love.
She’s smart, beautiful, interesting, independent, and she just so happens to be Black. While all those things are what you would normally expect from a lead in The Bachelor franchise, the last is not something we’ve ever seen happen, so we’re glad ABC is finally getting it together.
It’ s no secret that there has been an incredible lack of diversity, it not’s common knowledge that the series was sued for racial discrimination. The Hollywood Reporter broke the story back in 2012, claiming, “A group of Nashville residents … will file a class-action lawsuit against the ABC dating competition series The Bachelor and The Bachelorette for racial discrimination. The potential plaintiffs point out that over 10 years of the show and 23 seasons, the programs have not featured a single person of color as the featured Bachelor or Bachelorette.”
It didn’t get much better after that, either. Ben Higgins’ experience with Jubilee was loaded with a lot of problematic race issues. Jubilee picked up on it herself, but with good reason, was reluctant to call it what it was. She told Ben she often felt, “overshadowed by the Lauren Bs and the Beccas and the JoJos … Do you remember little old me, and our one-on-one date?”
Although Rachel’s stint on the upcoming Bachelorette won’t solve all the political problems of he series, it will surely go a long way to finally allow a person of color to flourish on the show.
