5. Talking Off Camera Is Highly Discouraged
It’s pretty obvious that the main objective of the show is to get things to happen and capturing those things on camera. While it may seem that’s not a difficult undertaking with the ubiquitous presence of cameras, but it’s harder than you may think.
Camera crews are around a lot, but they aren’t there around the clock. Consequently, producers and showrunners really discourage contestants, and couples for that matter, from doing or saying anything when cameras aren’t around.
Jillian Harrison likens it to a hostage situation. She suggests, “When the cameras aren’t rolling, they don’t want you to talk to anyone. And there are no phones, computers, newspapers, nothing. Only producers. Your body becomes starved for a connection with anyone, which makes it easier to fall in love. You’re starving for that intimacy. It was like Stockholm syndrome, but it’s a TV show.”
Sean Lowe revealed in his memoir, “several big things happened off screen. For example, during his season, he and Catherine Giudici had several sweet moments not caught on camera. A late night hug, an hours-long ride back from their one-on-one, the opportunity to destroy the set of their romantic dinner, and a late-night talk the night before the proposal.”
Conversations about faith and values often take place off camera as well. These usually happen while couples are in the Fantasy Suite, alone. This is became an issue in season 21, when Vanessa’s family voiced concern about their lack of communcation about serious issues.
