11. Contestants Incur All Kinds Of Side Effects From The Pressure
There are a lot of factors that can contribute to the intense pressure the contestants face on The Bachelor and it’s sister shows. Long nights, lots of booze, and heightened competition make for very tense circumstances. Some participant have reported suffering some pretty harrowing effects from all the anxiety, like hair loss, panic attacks and depression.
It’s gotten very serious for some past contestants.Chris Bukowski was on The Bachelorette and then on 2 seasons of Bachelor In Paradise. He wrote an open letter about his “retirement” from the franchise, and why it’s necessary for his mental health.
He says it changed his life for the worse, writing, “It almost completely ruined me, my family and my career. As I mentioned before, I couldn’t believe the hate towards me. The tweets, the Facebook messages, the media, etc. — I couldn’t handle it. I’ll never forget going to my parents’ house and witnessing my dad obsess over all of the stuff being said about me. That show ruined my relationship with my father at the time and created distance between me and my mother.”
Additionally there have been other former contestants who lost their battle with depression and committed suicide. Gia Allemande took her own life after appearing on Bachelor Pad. Her real life relationship was jeopardized after appearing on the after-show and she took her own life shortly after.
Although they try to vet the contestants using the screening process, one can’t ever predict how these circumstances will affect an individual once they’re in it.
