12. Contestants Get To Cheat To Remember All Those Names
It’s an impossible task to remember all those names on the first night – or even in those first few days. Bachelors and bachelorettes meet over 20 potential love interests at a time, and then they’re expected to remember all their names at the end of the night. There’s no way they can pull it off without a little behind the scenes help.
Ali Fedotowsky reveals how they do it. She dishes, “For the rose ceremony, we’d announce five names at a time. Then I’d leave, production would re-set the lighting, and I’d say the next five names. Then everything would be edited together. For group dates, like the first group date where there were 12 guys, I didn’t always remember the names. If I had to, I’d pull aside the main producer, Cassie, when it wasn’t obvious and ask.”
Sometimes producers resort to other kinds of tricks. Ali wrote in her blog, “Throughout the night a producer is never far from your side and constantly reminds you about everyone’s name. She (the producer) has flash cards with the pictures and names of every contestant. It is hard to remember everyone, even with the flash cards. It’s all so overwhelming.”
These sorts of tricks are a necessary evil. Otherwise we’d be forced to watch some really embarrassing moments. In the early days, they didn’t offer this kind of help, and as a result bachelor Jesse Palmer accidentally said the wrong name.
