48. Contestants Have To Give Up Their Jobs While They’re On The Show
Being on the Bachelor is a full time job in itself. You have to devote your undivided attention to finding love, and things like a steady paycheck, paying the light bill, and feeding yourself become far less important.
Once you’re picked to appear as a contestant on The Bachelor, you have to commit to the whole season, even though you might only make it a week or less. This means you have to give notice once you’ve been selected. There’s really no way a contestant could maintain their work without leaving the house, access to the internet, or with all the constant traveling. In some ways, it’s a practical measure, especially if you make it far in the season. For the others, it can be a real financial burden.
Ali Fedotowsky famously left season 14 of The Bachelor when she felt her job at Facebook was in jeopardy. She said goodbye to Jake and returned to work. Jake wasn’t so understanding either, and refused to allow her to come back.
Some contestants have tried. Lauren, from Ben Higgins’ season, tried to return to work after the season began airing, but found it almost impossible because of her growing fame. She remembers, “[Being a flight attendant] is such a public job, and I was getting stopped everywhere. After we got engaged and we went on our little media tour and stuff, it was really hard to go back to work. I wanted to, but it just wasn’t realistic.”
