49. Contestants Don’t Get Paid, But Bachelors/Bachelorettes Do

Contestants, male or female, don’t get paid to be on the show. This means they have to spend their own money preparing for the gig. That can add up to a lot of money.

Jillian Harris confessed on her blog, that she remortgaged her house and spent something like $8,000 on clothing.” Harris, was the second runner-up on the 13th season of Bachelor and was later the star of the fifth season of Bachelorette.

This is not really all that uncommon. Rumor has it that Olivia Cardi from Ben’s season, spent over $40, 000 on her clothes. Others are rumored to have cashed in their 401(k) and taken out extensive loans.

The Bachelors and Bachelorettes, on the other hand, do get paid. They are compensated, says Ben, according to their salaries. Other reports suggest they are paid based on their popularity, and fan favorite Emily Maynard made up to $250,000 for her appearance as The Bachelorette on the eighth season of The Bachelorette.

Ben said, “You don’t do The Bachelor to make money, I will say that. There are opportunities post-Bachelor sometimes, but as the bachelor they really just match whatever you’d be making in the real world during the months that it tapes. And then you have the experience that kind of pays for the rest.”
