23. The Bachelor/Bachelorette Doesn’t Get To Pick The Dates
The Bachelor is in the business of selling romance. When the women and men get those date cards and immediately start swooning, it’s easy to start falling in the love with the thoughtful and caring person who arranged it. But that’s not really how it goes. The lead doesn’t really get to pick the dates they go on.
The bachelor or bachelorette is just as surprised about date locations as the contestants, although they do get the info a little earlier. Desiree Siefried was on both sides of the date card, and she claims, “The bachelor or bachelorette doesn’t plan the dates and doesn’t even know where or what the date is until either the day before or the morning of the date.”
Even though they might not get to pick where, they do get to pick who. She reassures viewers, “Though they do get to choose who they want to go on which date. In the beginning, producers will suggest guys, but it’s ultimately up to the bachelor or bachelorette.”
This is exactly the way it should be to make the show run smoothly, but it does feel a little dishonest, especially to the folks who are being invited. The recipients of the invitation go all mooney-eyed when they receive those cards and quickly start to consider how much thought and time their love-interest put into the date. But we know it’s really just producers arranging dates for good TV.
