50. Bachelors and Bachelorettes Get A Say In The “Type” Of Contestants
It would be dream come true if every Bachelor or Bachelorette got to hand pick the collection of contenders. Flipping through head shots saying “yay” or “nay” might make for a more successful season everything.
But that’s not really how it works. Although it might be more practical to do it this way, the drama might wouldn’t be half as intense as it is now. As it stands now, a Bach/Bachelorette can only communicate what “kind” of person they’re interested in. They get to describe a general type, and then producers fill in the blank.
Season 20 Bachelor Ben Higgins said, “As you’re getting started as the bachelor, they ask you what kind of women you are interested in, what kind of things excite you about a woman, like activities and all that.” The producers will sprinkle in some women who generally fit the description, and then pad the rest with women who ensure good TV.
In theory, this ensures there is a possibility of a connection between the lead and the ladies he’s vetting. In practice, however, it makes for a much more explosive dynamic. While a girl might fit the Bachelor’s ideals on paper, when you put her in front of camera, competing with 19 other women, things can take an ugly turn. Which is probably what they’re hoping for all along.
