36. Contestants Have To Say “Journey” Instead Of “Process”
Have you ever wondered why so many of the contestants insist on talking about their “journey?” The word is ubiquitous – it’s almost like producers are telling contestants what to say.
Oh wait. They are. If someone uses the word “process” in their interviews, producers will stop taping and make them redo it. I guess the idea of a “process” is too cold and doesn’t have enough ick factor. Anytime anyone in my life says “journey” I automatically think they are talking about the band. No one has ever referred to dating or falling in love as their “journey” in real life.
It’s hard to imagine how this policy came to be. Maybe they want contestants to seem as silly and trite as possible or maybe the microphones have a harder time with one word or the other, but it seems an arbitrary rule to enforce. Especially when you have real problems like the constant crying, public drunkenness, and low-key misogyny.
If producers are taking advice (and they’re not, by the way) I have some phrases I’d like to eliminate from the show’s lexicon. For one, can we forbid contestants from using, “here for the right reasons”? It’s such a cliche now. We all know good and well that no one is there for the right reasons.
Others that should be axed: “I think I’m falling in love with you,” “I’ve never felt this way before,” and the classic, “I’m not here to make friends.” These all can go right now.
