39. The Ring Is Really Expensive And Couples Have To Stay Together To Keep It
The Neil Lane episode has become one of the iconic moments of the Bachelor and Bachelorette shows. Lane steps out of the limo, the men agonize over a case full of diamonds, and the next time we see it, the fiance is sporting it around, proudly.
The story that doesn’t get told is that, for one, those rings are very, very expensive. In fact, they can be hundreds of thousands of dollars. Ben Higgins’ pick for a ring reportedly cost $100,000.
With all this bling floating around, ABC has to hedge it’s bets. In fact, if couples don’t stay together for at least two years, then they have to return it. Jillian Harris had to return her ring after she and then-fiance Ed Swiderski’s bitter breakup.
Some reports have learned, “The Bachelorette‘s standard contract specifies that the ring remains the property of the show’s producers unless the couple remains together for two consecutive years. They do not have to marry within that time period.”
This compounds the pressure couples face after the show stops filming.
