Liz’s “break up” with Nick Viall during the second group date of The Bachelor season 21 hit close to home and was powerful.
One of the big storylines heading into The Bachelor season 21 was that Nick Viall had a secret history with one of the contestants vying for his affections, Liz. The two had made at Jade and Tanner’s wedding and, according to Liz, copulated that very night.
On the second episode of the season, just days after the limo arrivals, Liz was already struggling to keep this secret to herself, something she said in the premiere was a fun, neat thing between her and Nick. She spilled her guts about her history to Christen, the only girl she felt she could trust.
In the second group date, which Liz was a part of, the women had to stage a “break up” with Nick in a performance at the Museum of Broken Relationships. Liz was the last one shown and was by far the most powerful.
While most of the women seemed to go for a humorous and improved approach, Liz approached with cue cards and the honest truth.
It was a powerful and raw moment to those watching at home, who were aware of the history, and the other contestants who watched but were in the dark about Liz and Nick’s previous history. It led to some of the contestants commenting about whether or not the “break up” was legitimate or not.
Liz spelled out how her and Nick met and that she had been hurt in the past and wasn’t ready to fully let him in. She adds that she feels that Nick didn’t fight for her in that moment and asks him to fight for the women who could be his wife in the future.
“I know that this is the end of a chapter for us, but I really hope it’s a beautiful beginning for you,” Liz ends her speech with. Those words ended up being prophetic because Nick learns from Christen later in the episode that Liz has divulged details of their relationship.
This prompts Nick to ask to talk to Liz privately, then confronting her about it and having forced the issue on him publicly instead of waiting for a moment to talk, which ironically could’ve been this moment. He then proceeds to realize he has to reveal the details of his relationship with the rest of the women, sooner than he was publicly ready.
